3 Centers Merge

When doing the 3 Centers Merge after separating the wrists and lowering them to the navel, do the fingers have to remain touching or is it ok to have a slight space between the fingers? I feel more chi when my fingers aren't touching and have a fraction of an inch space between my fingers.
