Keep on squattin'Posted by Jim N on October 25, 19100 at 21:57:35: In Reply to: Difficulty with wall squats posted by Art Bingham on October 25, 19100 at 07:06:02: Hi Art, I agree with Julie, do whatever is necessary to start and progress from there. Many people experience falling back at first. Yes, it's OK to hold onto a door knob or door jam. I was having much difficulty at first. Then I started doing half squats with my feet shoulder width apart. Next, I progressed to full squats, feet still shoulder width apart. Then I moved my feet together. I still use a 1/2 inch board under my heels and it won't be long before I'm at 1/4 inch and then no board. If you use something under your heels, Luke cautions that it could become a crutch and to always try to progress to use less. One idea is to use a book and rip out a few pages every day. Other ideas: make sure nose and forehead stay close to the wall, as you go down, keep the back of the hands against the wall and move the shoulders toward the wall (I find that this really helps keep my weight forward), keep that mingmen tucked in, move the feet a few inches away like Julie suggests, and I also find it helpful to do gentle Achilles tendon stretches - the ankles must be flexible enough to get the weight onto the heels. Good luck and keep on squattin', Jim |
