Quiet MindPosted by Greg on November 03, 19100 at 09:08:10: In Reply to: How do I not intellectualize? posted by Mimi on November 03, 19100 at 01:01:52: Mimi, Isn't that frustrating? I have a very chattery mind myself. One thing to "keep in mind" is that just because the chi feeling goes away when you suddenly have a thought, that doesn't mean that the chi isn't there. So don't become disheartened! There are many different techniques one can use to try to quiet the mind. One that I like to do is to keep part of my intention always on the mingman area. At the workshops, Luke emphasizes that our motions should proceed in this way: mind--->chi--->body. In other words, let the chi move your body. Focusing on the mingman area or the dantien area helps to accomplish that. Another technique I like to employ is simply to listen. I may have thoughts going at a hundred miles an hour that are difficult to stop. Rather than try to stop them (which is counter productive) I just listen to them as if I were listening to the radio. I say to myself, "It's ok to think as much as you want, just be aware that you're doing it." When I have that awareness, usually the thoughts slow down and often times stop altogether. I think of them like little children who really want my attention, but when they get it the don't want it anymore and go away. Whatever you do, don't scold yourself or feel bad because your mind gets distracted. When you realize that you are distracted or intellectualizing, just return your focus to your practice. What happened in the past does not exist, what will happen in the future does not either, so neither matter. All that matters is what you are doing right now. Much quiet chi to you,
